Course changes offer pros a challenge

Regular visitors to the Constance Belle Mare Plage may have noticed a number of subtle design changes since they last played the Legend course.

The main alterations are all at par-five holes, namely the sixth, the 13th and the 18th.

The championship tee at the par-five sixth hole has been moved back 20 metres from its original location, with the intention of making it more difficult for the professionals to reach the green in two.

At the 13th, a huge pile of rocks that was positioned close to the left-hand side of the green has been removed and has been replaced by a bunker, giving players more freedom to attack the green with their second shot.

And on the final hole, the trench on the right that ran along the line of trees and into the lake has been filled and levelled and part of the lake has been back-filled to increase the fairway width.

“We are hoping the changes will encourage players to be a little more positive and, perhaps, a little more aggressive,” said course executive superintendent Ram Joorawon (pictured).

“Instead of the winning score being around six-under, we would like to make it 10-under or better.”
